  1. and yet our computers probably send just as much information to marketers, if not more, via those magical little cookie files. maybe blatant forms of observation like these little boxes will make us more aware of the passive data collection already occurring in our lives?

    • Yes, that’s right. Even more insidious than ‘cookies’ are the ‘Local Shared Objects’ installed by Adobe Flash Player that are widely used to track website use. Many people aren’t even aware of these and they are much less straightforward to manage than ‘cookies’ if you’re concerned about your privacy.
